Interviewing actress Cherilyn Doherty
1.-Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you started your acting career?
I'm a screen actor across Film & TV working closely with industry professionals here in New Zealand. I began my career as a creative professional in Music and transitioned into acting working on TV shows here in New Zealand like Shortland Street.
2.-What inspired you to become an actress?
Acting is a practice of non-judgement. With so much divide in this world it provides a solace to the soul, you are living a life and making decisions as your character that you may not normally make, this expansion of empathy drew me in.
3.-Which role has been the most challenging for you so far, and why?
It was a lot of fun but the most challenging role for me thus far was a comedic piece about a graveyard digger, I sit more in the world of drama and that pushed my edges.
4.-How do you prepare for a new character?
For me I allow the character to digest within my subconscious before I make any decisions, it's a form of meditation where I like to build the underlying levels of the psyche and see how the character is feeling each day in many different situations. Once the subconscious mind is built, the rest falls into place.
5.-Is there a particular performance that you are especially proud of?
I am proud of all my performances bigger and smaller because I learnt something valuable from each character.
6.-What have been some of the biggest challenges you have faced in the entertainment industry?
The year 2020 really slowed the industry down.
7.-How do you balance your personal life with your professional career?
I balance it by doing the things that make me uncomfortable in both areas. That secret sauce seems to be working for me. Once I do the things that are uncomfortable I am growing and that keeps everything moving forward.
8.-Have you ever learned a valuable lesson from a character you portrayed?
Yes, many but one of my top favourites are to allow yourself to breathe in life, don't let the judgemental mind tell you that you are nothing.
9.-Who are some actors or actresses that have inspired you throughout your career?
I like to learn from them all
10.-What do you enjoy most about working in film and television?
The stories that you can portray that have the ability to uplift humanity and change worldviews for the better
11.-How has the industry changed since you began your career?
The invention of technology has increased the pace, there are a lot of streaming platforms out there now and so much more content.
12.-What advice would you give to young people who dream of becoming actors?
If you genuinely love it, and it stirs a fire in your being, go for it and don't let anyone steal your dreams.
