Interviewing actor Mark Haxby
1-. How was your childhood?
I was born in Bradford in 1978 I was the first child of Susan and Robert Haxby. 4 years later my brother Lee was born. My dad lost his job and we had to move to a council estate called Thorpedge. We lived in a block of flats called Ailse House, I went to Parkland Primary school and so did my brother. I never really saw my dad in my early years as he was always working away when he got a new job always abroad so I do not really have any memories of him which is sad but I had my mum and brother. Sadly, my mum was an alcoholic and we saw this every night. I would be given a note from my mum and sent to the shop for 2 litre bottles of cider. I remember being 8 years old and picking up a stick and playing army this was the time I realised I wanted to be a soldier. We moved into a house in Idle and things were ok for a while. Then my dad left my mum and we were on our own. My mum went into full alcoholism and it was terrible. Men would come home and disrupt my brother and my peace it was a difficult time but we managed to get through it. Then she met her second husband Chris Chadwick. He was also an alcoholic and abusive. We moved away from Idle to the other side of Bradford called Allerton. We only stayed there for 9 months. In this time he destroyed the bottom of the house so we had to live upstairs every night they would be drunk even to the point of smashing my Nintendo Entertainment System up. One night it all came to a head and we left and found ourselves back in Thorpedge in emergency accommodation. By this time I was 14 and a part of the Army Cadets. I didn’t like school I just wanted to be a soldier so I never really bothered learning. Chris moved back in and it was ok for a few weeks then the drink started again. At this point I had a new brother Dale. He was only a baby. One night I was in my bedroom and I heard a lot of shouting at this point I was 15 and when I went into the living room Chris was charging at my mum so I ran into him and got him in a headlock undoing so I made him unconscious and then the police came and took him away. My brother and I moved in with my dad and his partner and things got a lot better. I guess these incidents could have broken me but they did the opposite.
2-. From what age did you decide to be a actor and filmmaker and how did you know you had the skills to go on TV?
Acting found me! In 2022 in Boxing Day I was lying on the couch with my partner Lesley and I was scrolling through Facebook when an acting advert came up for Matt Zina Acting. I applied as a joke and when I went to my first lesson I sat near the door to make my escape if it got cringy! And it did! I tried to get out of my chair but a voice said to me “stay” and I felt as if someone was pushing me down on to the chair. I have now been acting for 3 years and found what I am meant to do.
3-. Did your parents support you in the decision you made to be an actor?
My dad does support me he is interested in my acting but always tends to go on to the negative side saying it might not work etc… but I have already proved it has and is working. Sadly, my mum passed away in 2007 due to alcohol related illness.
