Interviewing model Jacquie

1. What inspired you to become a model, and what do you love most about your job?

I kind of just fell into modelling. It all started in 2019 when I was competing in bikini bodybuilding contests. I ended up doing nine shows and I was completely burnt out. I needed something else fulfilling to do. I applied for an agency in my city and was quickly accepted. What I love most about modelling is the amount of amazing photographers and other models that I have met and worked with. The type of modelling that I do is called Lifestyle- which is basically ads for companies showing lots of smiles and selling their product.
I also love doing creative photo shoots. That is where the real passion lies. Nothing is better than working with a creative photographer that has a vision where the two of us can bring it to life.

2. How do you prepare for a photoshoot or runway show? What’s your routine like?

Generally, I like to have at least a weeks notice before a photo shoot. I really want to understand the concept and what the client wants me to bring. Nothing is worse than being unprepared. If you’re gonna do this type of work, you need to be professional and show up on time. You also need to take care of your body, be accountable for the size and measurements you have given the client. Nothing is worse than getting to a job and the clothing doesn’t fit. I focus on eating healthy and going to the gym at least five days a week.

3. What advice would you give to young girls who want to start a career in modeling?

The biggest advice I would give young girls is to make sure you set your boundaries. I have worked with a lot of photographers doing creative shoots, and you have to make it clear to some about what you’re willing to do. Some girls will feel pressured to take more clothing off than they are comfortable with. I like doing sexy photo shoots, but I make it very clear to the photographer that I will not do naked photos or lacey lingerie. When you set boundaries, it gives you the power to create beautiful photos and not feel terrible about doing something your not comfortable with.

4. How do you stay fit and healthy? Do you have any favorite workouts or diets?

I stay fit and healthy by meal prepping and sticking to a strength training gym routine. I started lifting weights in 2018 and I haven’t looked back. Prior to this I used to run marathons and was constantly getting injured. Lifting weights has been the best thing that I have done for my workout routine. More women should be lifting heavy weights. I also stick to eating the same meals every day, but on weekends, I allow myself to go out for dinners. All my meals have a good amount of protein, some carbs and fat. You can still stick to a diet and have the occasional cheat meal. It’s OK.

5. Can you tell us about a memorable experience you’ve had in your career so far?

When I do ad campaigns for clients most of the time, I have no idea where they actually go or what happened to them. I really love it when my friends and coworkers see my ads around the city. It makes me laugh because they take photos for me and call me a celebrity’ haha. I did an ad campaign for a community college and I had no idea what they did with the photos. A month after the photo shoot one, of my friends saw my picture pasted on our city’s transit line. It always makes me laugh!

6. How do you handle the pressure and stress of being a model?

You really need to get a good nights sleep the night before a booking. Pressure and stress gets better with the more experience that you have. I remember my first couple of jobs. I was super anxious and nervous. Now I’m much more confident because I’ve been doing this for a while now. Practice creates confidence and being prepared and on time decreases stress.

7. What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of modeling?

It’s really hard to have any other hobbies or interest when I am a registered nurse full-time, and do modelling part-time. I spend my time off in the gym and hanging with friends and family. So I guess I would say going to the gym and hanging with friends and family is my main priority.

8. How do you think social media has impacted the modeling industry?

I think social media has been a positive and negative impact on the modelling industry. Unfortunately, lots of models will do things for free. I feel like clients paid much more for jobs five years ago then today. That is just the reality.
At least with social media, you can create your own vision of who you are and what you want people to see. You can represent yourself and how you want to be seen.

9. Can you tell us about a challenging experience you’ve had in your career and how you overcame it?

Modelling is very competitive. You can apply for 100 jobs and not get a single call back. The biggest challenge can be not having a great portfolio. Your portfolio is the most important tool to get hired.
There were times when I first started, I never got chosen for anything I applied for. Instead of giving up, I worked really hard with photographers to build up my portfolio and show diversity. If you work hard, it will pay off.

 10. What do you think is the most important thing for models to consider when working with clients or brands?

Be professional. Don’t show up late. Come prepared, understand what they want for the ad. When waiting to be on set, read a book, don’t be on your phone- just looks
unprofessional. Always be kind and friendly.

 11. Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or campaigns you’re working on?

The winter months generally slow down, but I always have creative photo shoots booked. I like to do about 3 to 4 of them in a month. Nothing’s better than creating art with a great photographer!

12. What message or inspiration would you like to share with our readers?

If you really want to do something, you can. If you believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve whatever you want. Never let anyone dim your light.
