Interviewing actress Yassmine Othman – Doña Marga in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3
1. What was your experience like filming The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon in Spain?
It was amazing, so far my favourite work.
2. Which Spanish locations stood out to you during filming?
Sepúlveda and Segovia which were the two where I filmed in.
3. How did you prepare for your role in this season of Daryl Dixon?
It was great to prepare Doña Marga, specially the make up and hair that made me look 75 years old... great work of Susana Sanchez Nuñez and her team as well as the costume team of Irene Orts.
Preparing for Doña Marga wasn’t difficult for I too am mother and grandmother in real life, my granddaughter is almost the same age as Justina/Candela Saitta.
4. Can you tell us about working with Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon)?
I had a few scenes with Norman, he’s a very generous actor and a great guy... quite funny too.
5. What were some challenges filming Daryl Dixon in Spain’s varied terrains?
Well I only shot in Sepúlveda and Segovia, it was beautiful but also very cold specially the night shoots were a bit harsh but overall enjoyed every momento.
6. How does the European setting influence Daryl Dixon story?
I think it gives the spinoff added value with it’s locations, traditions and cultural contributions.
7. Did you have standout moments or scenes during filming in Spain?
Yes I had a few: the scene talking to Carol during the dinner of La Ofrenda; the balcony scene when Justina walks in the town fighting walkers and I slap my son in front of the whole town; the scene when Carol is stealing medicine from my son Fede’s office to save Roberto’s life and I’m pointing a rifle at her.
8. What’s your take on survival and humanity themes in Daryl Dixon?
Throughout history, many things have been done for the survival of humanity, some good and some bad, and this time wasn’t going to be any different.
9. How did the production team handle language diversity in Spain?
It really wasn’t a mayor issue for now a days we all speak English even if at a basic level and for those very few who didn’t there was always someone available and willing to translate.
10. Were there notable interactions with other characters like Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride)?
Truth is that my carácter Doña Marga had quite some scenes with Carol (Melissa McBride); I enjoyed very much our scenes... Doña Marga and Carol although they didn’t know how to comunícate in each others language they had a very special motherly survival conection in common and I loved that.
11. What do you think fans appreciate about Daryl Dixon Spain set narrative?
Truth is that this question should be asked to the fans, I have been following and reading their posts on social media and there are many different opinions... it’s very hard to please everyone but I think that they enjoyed season 3, at least I sure do hope so.
12. How long did filming in Spain take for Season 3?
I think it was around three months.
13. Is there a focus on local Spanish culture in the storyline?
Yes, quite a lot, although it is also very well adapted to the story, considering the post-apocalyptic society in which it is set.
14. What’s your proudest moment from working on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon?
The truth is that I can't limit it to just to one. From the moment I was characterized as Doña Marga until we shot my last scene, each one was very special to me. I enjoyed every second I had the opportunity to play this great woman, mother, grandmother, healer, and neighbor of Solaz del Mar.
