Interviewing actress Dina Renon
1-. How was your childhood?
I was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I was a real tomboy, the youngest of 4 siblings, I was the loudest and always enjoyed playing outside. My parents are immigrants from Italy. We spoke Italian at home. When I was 11, I got the iconic Princess Diana hair cut. I cried after because a kid in my neighbourhood said I looked like a boy with short hair. I was tall for my age and so my sister always told me that models were tall. This caught my ear. I got laser focused on acting and modelling. I was influenced by my friend’s sister that was modelling in town. I became obsessed. Nothing else mattered and it is still like that for me now. I was obsessed because I didn’t know that you can have that much confidence and emotions that impacts people in a positive way. This really resonated with me. This was the start of me wanting to start acting.
2. - From what age did you decide to be an actress and how did you know you had the skills to go on TV?
I could not get the idea of acting and modelling out of my head at 12 years old. There was a summer course at a modelling school in Ottawa and I was really obsessed. The course consisted of learning self confidence, presentation, photo movement and runway. I enjoyed it very much. After the course ended I was asked to do small jobs. Then my big break came. An agent from Japan came to audition talent to work in Osaka during summer break from high school. I was the only one selected out of 75 people. This confirmed I had the skills to pursue this career.
At 16, I went to Japan on a contract to work as an actress and model. My dream came true! I ended up working there for 23 years. I learned how to speak Japanese, which was an extremely challenging language to learn. I also hosted and produced a show teaching English using the Japanese language.
I miss Japan very much. I hope to get a job in a Japanese tv series or movie working alongside Japanese actors and using my knowledge of the Japanese language.
3. - Did your parents support you in the decision you made to be an actress?
My parents had no choice but to support my decision to become an actress and model because I was so adamant about pursuing this career. I was laser focused. I believe I made them worry too much. The reason is because I went to Japan, lived and worked there, at the tender age of 16 on my own without my parents. They gave me the ultimate support by letting me go.
4. - What was your first appearance on the screens?
My first experience was working on a huge commercial in Japan for a very elegant lingerie company. I was only 18. I became very popular among the industry people and audience. This kick started me getting more tv/film related jobs.
5. - What was the role you liked the most?
I played roles in Canada and Japan in tv/films, music videos and commercials. The role I loved the most was in a science fiction film. I played a hybrid human/alien role. It was one of the first films I did when I moved back to Canada and I had to invent my own language. It was great fun. I believe that this film inspired me to continue pursuing my goal as a professional actor.
6.- What do you think led you to fame?
I think the most important quality you need to lead you to fame is strictly passion. The passion is what fuels the perseverance and makes the hard work fun. Accommodated with discipline and a good work ethic. I LOVE ACTING SO MUCH!!!!!!
7-. What types of characters you would like to interpret?
I love any character really. Any character from historical, science fiction , fairytale to more relatable characters such as FBI agents, femme fatal and mother roles. Period pieces steal my heart.
8-. What actresses and actors do you feel comfortable working with?
I love to work with any actor that engages in the scene with me professionally, who are friendly, open, generous and who inspires me. I firmly believe that the team work makes the dream work.
9-. In what other genres of art would you like to participate? (Works of theatre, music, among others)
I would love to have more theatre experience, but tv and film acting is my passion. Voice work and modelling are also fun.
10.- Do you have any experiences that have marked you in your life and as a person?.
The experience to have the opportunity to work in Japan on my own at the age of 16 gave me the courage to pursue this career. I also adopted an excellent work ethic that I believe to be invaluable as an actor, that is the perseverance, hard work and discipline. But you cannot do it alone. I have to give credit to the people who supported and encouraged me throughout my career. They have significantly marked milestones in my life and made me a better person.
11.- What has been your greatest achievement?
I think any job is a big achievement. I feel grateful when any client would invest in my talent and trust me to perform in their project. I have so many lovely experiences from jobs in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, NY, Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa. For example, recently, I did a feature film for Lifetime television where my character plays a key role in opening the film. I was complimented by the director for my performance. This means everything to me. And in my mind, the compliment is my achievement. All of my projects are equally important and mean the world to me. I always give 100%.
12.- What projects will you make next and which ones do you have in mind?
In this industry actors don’t always have the power to choose. Usually I need to audition, then casting and clients decide. My biggest dream is to have a recurring role in a tv series. I would also love to work internationally with other actors, crew, directors, producers and script writers. I believe working hard, will get me recognized by the industry and the opportunities will come organically.
13.- Would you like to make a movie in Spain?
I was just there and I LOVE SPAIN!!!!!! I visited La Coruña. I also went to Vigo. I would love to live in Spain and shoot a movie there. It was breathtakingly beautiful, historical and I felt very safe there. The people are elegant and friendly. So YES!
14.- you like Spanish cinema?
Yes very much. One of my favourite tv series was called “Money Heist”. What I loved was the authenticity of the actors. The character development was brilliant. I fell in love with all the characters. Everybody brought something different to the table which made the story interesting. There were elements of Spanish culture that touched my heart. For example, the way the characters spoke about the food, the relationships, the brotherhood and sisterhood shared between them, helped me understand the beautiful heart of the Spanish culture. I wanted this series to continue.
