Interviewing actress Niki J Borger
1. - From what age did you decide to be an actress and how did you know you had the skills to go on TV?
I was twelve when I saw my first musical – Starlight Express – and I was immediately hooked. I grew up watching and loving movies, but musical theater was a whole new level. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen and the coolest thing I could imagine myself doing for the rest of my life. However, it wasn’t until my mid 20s that I had the courage to pursue an artistic career. I had been performing in various arts all my life, so I knew that it’s not so much about talent, but about the work you put into honing your craft. So, I decided to go all in and see what happens.
2. - Did your parents support you in the decision you made to be an actress?
No. In fact, there was a time of about six months when we barely spoke to each other. But then they came around and decided to not just allow me to do it, but actually support me in doing it. Both of them were very proud when they first saw me on stage.
3. - What was your first appearance on the screens?
My first appearance on screen was in a German movie called “A day like any other”. I was eighteen and one of the principals. By that time I had already been performing on stage, in plays and comedy improv shows, for four years. The movie dealt with drug abuse among teenagers and had a huge impact in the town I’m from. People started to recognize me in public. It was quite an experience and I even got my first award for that performance.
4. - What was the role you liked the most?
My favorite character so far was in a play I did last year, called Demon Core. My character was rather ditsy in the beginning, but throughout the play she would allow herself more and more to be herself and show her depth. That was a fascinating journey for me and I loved taking the audience along.
5-. What types of characters you would like to interpret?
With every character I portray I would like to expand my abilities and my understanding of life and the human condition. I want to become more understanding towards all paths of life, and drop the judgment. So the characters that excite me are the ones I didn’t get to do yet. In an upcoming play, for example, I get to play a drug addict, alcoholic mom. That’s quite a stretch from where I’m now, but I’m excited to work on it. In an upcoming TV show, I’m playing a very, very nerdy character. I’m sure that’s going to be fun!
6-. What actresses and actors do you feel comfortable working with?
I love working with actors who are authentic, present and connected. But, everyone has their own approach. As long as the other person is keeping it real and safe, I’m comfortable.
7.- In what other genres of art would you like to participate? (Works of theater, music, among others)
I do plenty of theater and I dance. I would love to do a bit more musical theater again, I really miss having music in my life every day. But overall I love the mix of stage and screen that I get to have right now.
8.- What has been your greatest achievement?
There are two things I’m really proud of. The first is making it through 3-years full-time training in musical theater. Throughout that time, I was training and performing every day from 7am til 10pm, with next to no breaks in between. It was incredibly hard, but I still pushed through and made it happen.
The other thing is coming to America. Obtaining a talent visa to the US requires a lot, and I’m really proud to exceed those standards and to have the chance to prove myself in Hollywood.
9.- What projects will you make next and which ones do you have in mind?
The next projects I’ll be working on will be the Extravaganza Festival for One Act Plays in Los Angeles. Then I’m going to do a play called “Lungs”. And then I’ll be in pre-production for a comedy streaming series called “Marriage Deal”.
10.- Would you like to make a movie in Spain?
I’d love to do a movie in Spain! It’s a great country with joyful people and excellent food – who wouldn’t want to go there?!
